Today the estate is worked organically, and sheep graze between the vines for a large part of the year. Their reds are brooding Mourvedres but the rosé is a more balanced blend of Mourvedre and Cinsault. Fermented in concrete, the resulting wine is one of the richest rosés around that is dry with a full body and a rich floral nose.

It’s one of the Medoc’s oldest estates, and through the years has been fortunate enough to remain in good hands. The current owners are the fourth generation of the same family managing Talbot.
The soils are well raised and gravelly producing classic Bordeaux aromas all in a balanced package. It’s lively and framed by a sensational texture and a lingering finish. Aromas of plum confit, crème de cassis, tobacco, licorice, and roasted herbs mingle with a woody, charcuterie-like savory note that will only deepen with age.

While they make plenty of Sauvignon Blanc, their focus is not on producing easy SB, but on producing wines that transparently show where they are from. While 80% of their production is white wine the do produce this beautiful blend of Pinot and Gamay that is juicy and fresh. It has rich that are complemented by floral and earthy undertones. There’s a bit of spice inflection from the terroir that sits on a well of deep minerality.

From former NYC somm Lee Campbell and partner Lee Jordan comes a beautifully bubbly red perfect for crushing with food. Like Lambrusco it’s incredibly food friendly, but unlike Lambrusco it’s made with the Virginia grape Tannat. It’s muscular but still bouncy and lightened with 12% Albariño and 9% Petit Manseng. What a fun thing to explore.

$29.00Add to cartWe love the wines of Dolores Cabrera who focuses on Listán (Blanco and Negro) across Tenerife. She loves 100+ year old vines, and while her husband Pedro helps in the cellar she employs a team of women to pick because she believes they are more deft at picking grapes during harvest. The soils in the la Orotava are a mix of volcanic and clay. There’s a distinct earthiness and crunch texture to the wines. The Listan Negro Rosado (rosé) is absolutely vibrant and our favorite of her wines. It’s got rich red berry fruit but also a deep spiced cherry core that’s helped along by salinity, smoke, and earthiness.

This wine comes from a steep parcel of land in Mauves that has produced a delicious Syrah that has all the layers of fruit, spice, and flowers you could want.

Domaine Boris Champy Hautes Cotes du Beaune Montagne 382 2021
$79.00Add to cartThe site for Boris Champy was developed by Didier Montchovet, an early adopters of biodynamics in Burgundy. Today the estate wines are all labeled under Boris Champy and are fully certified.
This wine comes from their Montagne de Cras plot in Nantoux which is at 382 metres altitude and the name of the Montagne de Cras lieu-dit on the label. The pebbly slope has all kinds of life and even a few rare corm trees. The wine itself is aged on the lees in barrique for a year with 25% new oak before resting in stainless. The resulting wine is clean, smooth and full of citrus and honeysuckle with a well-integrated, judicious note of oak.
