El Jolgorio Mezcal Madrecuishe Don Chucho 750ml
$160.00Add to cartCreated by the Cortés family, considered by many to be mezcal royalty, El Jolgorio has a fantastic collection of agave spirits. These are rare expressions: wild, semi-wild, and cultivated agaves, rare pechuga distillations, and small batches rested in glass for three, six, or as much as eighteen years before release. They source ethically, spreading out their agave collection so as to not over-harvest one region for a particular agave type and work all organically.
This bottle is 100% Madrecuishe (Agave karwinskii which is less than 1% of the agave in the state of Oaxaca) that is milled using a horse driven stone tahona which is fermented naturally in open air wooden tinas. They have fermented the trunk which results in a spirit that is more vegetal in the aromatics with a touch of fruit and salted peanut / caramel, and a slightly higher sugar content.

Mal Bien Arroqueno Victor + Emanuel Ramos 750ml
$117.00Add to cartElla tasted this recently and left her notes:
I tasted the Mal Bien Ramos Arroqueno and really enjoyed it. I found on the palate that it had some floral undertones with prominent baking spice (especially vanilla and clove), vegetal, and beeswax notes. Also some tropical fruit: banana and faint passion fruit, yum. Incredibly smooth with a lovely, lingering finish, which belies how high in alcohol it is.

Mal Bien Felix Ramirez Arroqueno Mezcal
$84.00Add to cartWe love Mal Bien for its transparency, farmer / producer focused offerings, and consistency. The farmers they work with are always excellent and far overdeliver on their price points.
This particular Mezcal is extra special and made by Felix Ramirez. He works with a few varietals of agave (espadín, tepextate, cuishe, tobalá, and castilla), but often all his offerings are in minuscule quantities. Why? Because he only works with plants that he grows himself—an incredibly rare decision. On fridays, he drives north to the Ocotlán market, where he sells his mezcal and uses the money to purchase packaged goods that his wife and daughter sell out of their neighborhood store.
This bottling is made with Arroqueno agave, a huge plant that is the genetic parent of the more common espadin. The flavor profile makes sense, it’s just that Arroqueno is a super charged version: it’s fruity but features deep roasted agave flavors and has a fantastic viscous texture. Felix works very traditionally using a tahona mill, copper Alambic still, and open vats for fermentation.

Neta Mezcal Hugo Garcia Maldonado Medrecuixe 750ml
$199.00Add to cartThis is an absolutely stellar Mezcal that as the name Neta implies is the real deal. Strawberries, flower, and smoke lead in the aromas, but with a little oxygen these will harmonize into a symphony of complex flavors. A stellar Mezcal.
-
Nuestra Soledad San Baltazar Guelavila Mezcal 750ml
$79.00Add to cartA very small batch mezcal from San Balthazar Guelavila, a small town in the district of Tlacolula, right next door to other well-known distilling communities. Don Gregorio “Goyo” Martinez’s Espadín grows at around 5,500 feet on very fertile soil, primarily of limestone. The agave is cooked in earthen oven, milled by stone tahona, and fermented in wooden tanks before being distilled twice in traditional copper pot stills. The mezcal is sweet with ripe tropical fruit, caramelized agave, Chinese five spice, and wet stone.
