Seabra Xisto Ilimitado Tinto 2021
$36.00Add to cartA delicious red from Luis Seabra (possibly the single most important Portuguese producer of the last two decades) who has spent the last years leading a moment of young, independent winemakers to explore historical vineyards, indigenous grapes, and old techniques. His own goal is to prove that the Douro can produce terroir-driven still wines through minimal intervention in the vineyards and winery (on top of an encyclopedic understanding of both). This “cru” is a field blend from schist heavy soils. This Touriga Franca driven blend comes from sustainably farmed vineyards in Cima Corgo. The wine aromas are high toned with red and blue fruit, wet stones, and violets. The palate is a little more red than blue, think cherry and pomegranate while white pepper, slate, and herbs sit on top of the juicy fruit. Ultimately a fresh and delicious choice.

Suore Cistercensi Coenobium Lazio Bianco 2023
$29.00Add to cartOrganic wine is one thing, but organic wine (made with very minimal intervention, i.e., naturally) by nuns? It’s enough to cause a sensation. Ninety minutes north of Rome, 80 Cistercian nuns farm ten acres of vines entirely organically. With some consultation from the Bea family, the nuns have turned out some wines that are just like they are. The spartan landscape (and cellar) are energetic and full of warm spirit.
The Coenobium is a blend of Trebbiano, Verdicchio, and Malvasia, co-fermented without added yeasts, aged on its fine lees, and bottled just before the next harvest without fining or filtering. The nose evokes autumn with aromas of fennel fronds, chamomile tea, almonds, and tangerine that lead into a full but delicate palate. Vitorchiano’s volcanic soils seep through with a somber smoke-iron interplay, and glowing acidity lets the savory flavors coat the mouth.
