If there were an award for doing things the hard way, Tenmile Distillery would probably win it—and wear the medal proudly. Every bottle is handcrafted with uncompromising attention to detail, because when it comes to making great gin, shortcuts are for GPS, not distillers.
At the helm is Master Distiller Shane Fraser, formerly of Scotland's northernmost whisky distillery, Wolfburn, where his award-winning single malts earned international acclaim. Tenmile lured him across the Atlantic with a simple challenge: create a distinctly New York spirit with all the precision and tradition of Scottish distilling.
Their obsession with local doesn't stop there. In a perfect year, every grain of wheat and barley comes from farms within 30 miles of the distillery in Dutchess and Columbia Counties. When Mother Nature inevitably throws a tantrum, they still source exclusively from New York State. Local means local.
And the gin? Worth every bit of the fuss. Bright, elegant, and beautifully layered, it opens with classic juniper before unfolding into fresh orange peel, lemon, lemon balm, and mint grown right on the distillery grounds. The result is a crisp, citrus-driven gin that feels equally at home in a Vesper, a G&T, or sipped neat if you're feeling particularly civilized.
It's the kind of gin that makes gin lovers smile... and has a funny habit of turning "I'm not really a gin person" into "Okay... maybe I am."
