Stag’s Leap

The Estate That Triumphed at the Judgment of Paris

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars was founded in 1970 by Warren and Barbara Winiarski with the purchase of the Stag’s Leap Vineyard. Only six years later, the 1973 S.L.V. Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded the highest honor at the Judgment of Paris blind tasting, besting First Growth Bordeaux Chateaux. Today, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars is a quality benchmark for California Cabernet Sauvignon. The team is dedicated to ensuring the winery’s legacy of sustainability and land stewardship by promoting a healthy ecosystem. The estate is a Napa Green Certified winery, California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance certified, and Fish-Friendly Farming certified.

The heart of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars is undoubtedly the estate vineyards, which express distinct personalities and a sense of place. S.L.V., also known as Stag’s Leap Vineyard, is the winery’s first vineyard, planted in 1970. The vineyard is home to 35 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and 1.5 acres of Cabernet Franc, and is composed of predominantly volcanic soils with healthy drainage. This vineyard continues to produce wines with complex black fruit and berry character, spicy intensity and excellent structure. Wines from S.L.V. are craft to be enjoyed upon release, but also promise long life and an exceptional ability to age.

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ signature style is a balance between ripeness and restraint, softness and structure, with extraordinary care taken to assure that the wines’ aroma, flavor, and texture convey a sense of place. The team pushes the boundaries of winemaking with precise plot-by plot-viticulture and impeccable winemaking.
