Semeli

A Modern Representation of 2,500 Years of Greek Winemaking Tradition

Founded in 1979, Semeli focuses on the creation of high quality Greek wines. The gentle Mediterranean climate, the extraordinary potential of the soil and the different varieties they cultivate, together with the sun that bathes the landscape, determine the high quality of Semeli wines. Their privately-owned hillside vineyards span 250 acres, while other vineyards are grown by affiliated winegrowers under long-term partnership agreements in neighboring areas.

Semeli practices sustainability at their winery, which is carbon neutral, and they invest continuously in modern facilities and processes, with an emphasis on energy efficiency. The winery is located at a high altitude among the hilly Koutsi region, one of the most celebrated “crus” of Nemea, where crop levels are low, concentration of flavors high, and fruit and natural acids in positive balance. Today, Nemea is celebrated for the local Agiorgitiko variety, one of Greece’s most important red grapes with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) certification, perpetuating a 2,500 year old tradition. To make high quality wines they combine indigenous Greek grape varieties along with locally grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer, producing wines with exciting complexity, depth of flavor, superb balance and delightful finish.

A key process at their vineyard estate is their gravity-fed winery, which was designed to take full advantage of the terrain’s sloping gradient. From pressing to bottling, the entire process relies on the force of gravity rather than on mechanical methods that may damage the grape. Moreover, by reducing grape temperature and carefully controlling both temperature and humidity throughout the facility, they minimize oxidation and promote fermentation under ideal conditions. This results in nearly zero defects and produces top notch wines.
