Six Generations Shaping Grand Cru Chardonnay in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger

The Pierre Péters estate, situated in the heart of the "Côte des Blancs" in the village of Le Mesnil sur Oger has been a family house for six generations and has produced Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Champagnes since 1919. Their wines come exclusively from their own vineyards. Located in the southern part of the Côte des Blancs, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger enjoys one of the most storied terroirs in Champagne. The Côte des Blancs is a long steep slope that forms the eastern edge of limestone-capped plateau just south of Épernay. Here, the vineyards are located on an east-facing hillside that has good water drainage and water-absorbing chalk soils. This unique terroir protects the land from the harsh western winds and creates the perfect humidity levels for growing Chardonnay at its most intensely mineral, racy and finessed character.

After careful monitoring of the maturity of the vineyards, whole bunches of grapes are harvested by hand and transported carefully to the press. They press slowly in order to split and isolate the juice of most interest for the development of their vintages. Fermentation occurs in small stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures, parcel by parcel, and kept on the lees. All wines go through malolactic to soften their natural high acidities without diminishing their inherent power and development.

The Pierre Péters estate practices sustainable farming methods by avoiding pesticides and herbicides and managing yields through cover crops and regular ploughing, with the aim to produce the finest grapes while respecting the land, the environment, and nature. Each year, they adapt their cultivation methods to obtain healthy grapes so that their Champagne expresses more precisely the richness, subtlety and the elegance of the great "terroirs" of the Côte des Blancs.
