Peter Michael
Limited Production and Classical Winemaking From Mountain Vineyards
Peter Michael Winery needs no introduction. Year after year their artisan releases bring pleasure to people all over the world, and it all started in 1982 when Sir Peter Michael founded the winery on a square mile of rocky volcanic ridges on the western face of Mount St. Helena. From the beginning, the philosophy was modeled on French winemaking tradition and governed by three principles: the vineyard terroir would be the single most important feature, the wines would be lightly elegant rather than powerful, and a hundred-year commitment would be made to the development of a great estate.
The Knights Valley Ranch encompasses nearly 750 acres, inclusive of vineyards on the hillsides of Mount St Helena at elevations reaching 2,000 ft. From the rugged slopes of Mount St. Helena, the brisk, oceanic Sonoma Coast, and the iron-rich soils of the Oakville bench, Peter Michael Winery produces an offering of single-vineyard estate wines indicative of each of these distinct lands.
The Michael family have nurtured and preserved the land to sustain a balance of wildlife alongside vineyards, exemplified by their practice of low-input sustainable farming techniques and their California Sustainable Vineyards & Winery and Fish Friendly Farming certifications. Currently, winemaking is under the leadership of Robert Fiore who uses time-honored winemaking methods - hand sorting of grapes, native yeasts, French oak barrels, and bâtonnage. Every bottling is an expression of the skill of the winemaking team and the terroir of the land.
