Pazo de Barrantes
Albariño With A Focus on Purity and Aromatic Definition
Pazo de Barrantes is located near the Atlantic coast in the Galician Salnés valley, in the heart of the D.O. Rías Baixas. The region is known for producing some of the country’s most sought-after dry white wines. The zone’s reputation is based on the albariño grape, of which the purest examples are found in the Salnés valley.
The unrivalled terroir and unique microclimate, combined with daily effort, care and expert knowledge, produces grapes of the highest quality year after year. The grapes are sourced from the 30-acre estate vineyards that are divided into 8 different plots located around the winery. The shallow soils of the estate are granitic with sand on the surface and the average vine age of the vineyard is 30 years. The vines are trained high on supporting wires in the ‘parral’ trellis system (also known as Parron), as is the local tradition, to guard against mildew and rot, and to assist in ripening.
By controlling fermentation temperature as much as possible in stainless steel tanks, winemaker María Vargas can slow down fermentation and obtain greater purity and aromatic intensity. After two months in contact with the lees, wine gains texture, while seven months of rest in the tank improve its balance and harmony. The introduction of wood is a defining change to the Pazo de Barrantes Albariño, while the incorporation of concrete to the aging process of La Comtesse helps to polish this wine, enhancing its expressiveness and in the cellar.
