Mendel

A Winemaking Partnership Producing Balanced and Intense Wines

Mendel wines classically combine Roberto de la Mota’s prestigious winemaking skills and tremendously old vineyards to make Mendoza’s most elegant wines. Proprietor and long-time wine lover, Anabelle Sielecki, partnered with Roberto to transform her family’s historic 1928 vineyard into the respected estate it is today. She honors her father, a hardworking immigrant and successful businessman, by putting his first name, Mendel, on the label.

The vineyards are located between 900 and 1,150 meters above sea level, in the best and highest irrigated lands of Luján de Cuyo and Valle de Uco, Mendoza. The soils are of alluvial origin formed with materials from the Andes Mountains. Very stony, highly permeable, with little content of nitrogen and organic matter, rich in potassium, they are soils that give rise to low to medium vigor vineyards but allow high levels of concentration and intensity in their grapes. The climate is desert and continental with well-defined seasons throughout the year.

The time of harvest is determined after many tours of the plots testing the grapes. A fair maturity is sought here to ensure the intensity and quality of both fruit and tannins. The objective is to obtain a wine with intense maturity and a large amount of fruit, but with a balance of acidity that ensures prolonged aging.
