Meinklang
Natural Wines from the Heart of an Austrian Working Farm
Meinklang is an original, family-run mixed farm, set in the middle of the World Heritage Site of the National Park Neusiedlersee, on the Eastern side of the Neusiedlersee Lake, bordering directly on the Hungarian lowlands, where life’s diversity and complexity are celebrated.
They fertilise their vineyards with the compost produced on the farm, using sheep, cow and horse manure, pomace, green waste and occasionally also rock dust. Robust and healthy vines can only grow in soil which is alive, producing completely individual wines full of character. The mineral-rich volcanic soils are ideal for the vines. Basalt and loess weather together with light layers of sand to make fertile soils. They are loose, well-aerated and retain heat – the perfect conditions for vines. Through small cracks in the rock, their roots penetrate many metres into the mountain’s interior, absorbing its valuable minerals.
In the cellar, they work exclusively with natural, spontaneous fermentation. They use no fining agents, and little to no sulfur. They avoid pumping and use gravity flow. They primarily use concrete vessels for maturing their wines, which offers the benefit of allowing the ideal amount of oxygen to reach the wine naturally. Stainless steel is completely airtight, whereas wood has quite large pores. Concrete, however, allows oxygen to penetrate through a multitude of extremely small pores, making micro-oxygenation possible.
