Masciarelli
A Family Defining Modern Abruzzo Wines
Masciarelli Tenute Agricole was established in 1981 from the entrepreneurial intuition of Gianni Masciarelli, a symbol of Italian wine and protagonist of the success of modern wine production in Abruzzo. Today the company is led by Marina Cvetic, wife of Gianni, and their eldest daughter Miriam Lee Masciarelli, who together have taken up the difficult legacy of continuing to elevate Abruzzo wines and vines into the world wine scene.
The beating heart of the winery is in San Martino sulla Marrucina, in the province of Chieti. In a span of only 30 miles between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea, Masciarelli has carefully assembled 60 specific sites averaging just 5 acres and spread across the diverse soils and altitudes of the 4 provinces of Abruzzo. The Abruzzo region is very varied: a harsh landscape, sometimes wild, that slopes rapidly from the mountains to the hills all the way to the Adriatic.
These vineyards are farmed sustainably, and planted on soils of calcareous clay, in a combination of traditional pergola as well as spur cordon and single guyot training that Gianni Masciarelli pioneered in the region. After destemming, the grapes are pressed and undergo a short, warm fermentation on the skins in stainless steel. Further aging in stainless steel maintains the freshness and vibrancy of the fruit. The wine is then racked and bottled by gravity without fining or filtration, resulting in a wine that exhibits bright red berries, cherry, redcurrant and violet aromas and flavors.
