Laurent Miquel

Regenerative Farming Creating Elegant Languedoc Wines

The Miquel family boasts eight generations of winemakers. They acquired their land in the Languedoc region in the south of France in 1791 and have been careful custodians ever since. The Languedoc is famous for its 'garrigue' - the native herbs, bushes and shrubs that dot the landscape and impart a unique influence to their wines.

Laurent Miquel’s innovative approach in the vineyards - north-south planting, a focus on healthy soil and introduction of harvesting by night - has seen him recognised as one of the top producers of white wines in the Languedoc. Pursuing his vision of elegant and fresh white wines, Laurent turned his attention to the Albarino grape, more often associated with northwest Spain . The combination of high altitude, constant breezes from the mountains, and morning humidity create the ideal growing conditions for Albarino and in 2009 Laurent planted 29 hectares of the grape. Their estate is also home to many old Syrah vines . These vines are low-yielding, with some only producing one or two bunches every year that produce grapes of intensity and concentration, and wines with great ageing potential.

The Miquel family takes pride in their regenerative approach with no artificial chemicals. They let wildflowers, grasses, and cover crops thrive between the vines, creating a haven for insects and birds. They also grow a variety of grains across the estate (polyculture) and plant cover crops in alternate rows between the vines. By avoiding artificial chemicals and encouraging natural biodiversity, their vines develop deeper root systems that capture more nutrients and character from the soil. This creates wines that are more expressive, vibrant and elegant.
