Kolonia 52
Wines Handcrafted in Hungary
Owned by couple Annamária Török and Attila Francisti, this winery is located in Szent György-hegy, a popular hill above the north shore of Lake Balaton, Western Hungary. Despite their young age, Annamária and Attila have a lot of winemaking experience under their belt. The couple used to work for several other natural wine producers prior to establishing their own winery. They manage 7 acres of vineyards, which are a mixture of estate owned and long-term rental, and occasionally source fruit from local organic growers. They produce about 800 cases annually.
The vineyards are located on different places around the hill, resulting in a true mosaic of soil and sun exposures that the pair works with savvily. Most of their vineyards lie on the eastern side, where the “cooler” morning sun is great for acidity and freshness, similar to the north-facing vineyards. On the western side, they work biodynamically and plant trees and bushes for shade to offset the heat.
Harvest is done manually. Fermentation only occurs naturally, followed by aging in neutral oak in barrels or amphora. No pump is used during any of the processes; all racking and bottling is done only by gravity. They don’t add any sulfur during any of the processes. The result is energetic natural wines.
