Hubert Lignier

Low-Intervention, Well-Aging Wines from Burgundy

The Domaine Hubert Lignier has long had a reputation for its fine wines known for their concentration, depth and structure. Hubert's son, Laurent, is the next generation of this proud estate and is following his father's traditional practices to ensure the treasures coming from the family's impressive vineyard holdings continue to exhibit the best of their appellations.

The domaine owns 8.30 hectares principally in the villages of Morey Saint Denis, Gevrey Chambertin and Chambolle Musigny. The thin clay and limestone soil on the slopes is not conducive to vigorous growth and limits the crop naturally. Their vineyard is mainly composed of old vines planted through massale selections (i.e. replacing missing vines with cuttings from the same vineyard), with the oldest dating back to 1936. The Ligniers follow the principles of "lutte raisonnee": only organic compost is used when necessary and no herbicides are used. Since 2006, the estate has been following organic practices and was officially certified in 2019.

Their methods for vinification and aging are minimally interventionist. After manual harvesting and careful sorting, grapes are vinified in tanks and aged for nearly two years in oak barrels. Before barreling, the lees are selected and evenly distributed in each barrel, with a proportion of 20 to 30% new oak. A lengthy aging process of around twenty months follows; they are then racked and bottled by gravity, without filtration or clarification. This long and patient work produces balanced and refined wines with significant aging potential, while remaining relatively approachable at a young age.
