Guado al Melo
Small Lot Vinification in Bolgheri
Guado al Melo is a family-owned and run winery, managed by the Scienza family. The documented viticultural history of this estate dates to at least the beginning of the 19th century. Michele Scienza and his wife Annalisa Motta purchased the estate in 1998. They named it “Guado al Melo” to highlight their connection with the territory, as is common practice in Tuscany. “Guado al Melo” (Ford at the Apple Tree) is the ancient name of this place. It refers to the ford on the Fossa di Bolgheri creek, the stream that surrounds the vineyard and gives the alluvial quality to the soils.
Guado al Melo now comprises 20 hectares of vineyards in production, rich in biodiversity. Most of the Guado al Melo vineyards are located in the foothills of Bolgheri, in a small valley that falls between them, with an east-west orientation. This area has the coolest average temperature in the territory and the greatest summer temperature range between day and night. This micro-climate allows their wines to strike a perfect balance between elegance and power. It guarantees good freshness and a remarkable richness of aromas.
The grapes are vinified in small separate lots, coming from micro-zones of vineyards with homogeneous characteristics. Each lot is thus followed with extreme care and in the most appropriate way for it. Some lots are mono-varietal. Others are the result of a careful study of field-blend, to obtain the unique synergies that develop from the co-fermentation of several varieties.
