Giacomo Conterno
The Historic Estate Producing One of Italy’s Greatest and Most Iconic Wines
The Giacomo Conterno winery is one of the greatest names in all of Piemonte, most known for producing the Barolo Monfortino The estate was founded in the 1920’s by Giacomo Conterno, who was not the first in the family to make wine but the first to label the bottles with the family’s name. Today, the torch has been passed to third generation winemaker, Roberto Conterno. Roberto himself is a fastidious and perfectionist winemaker, and many feel he has taken the winery to even greater heights than his predecessors.
The winery is situated in Bussia of Monforte d'Alba. The estate, which vinifies exclusively its own grapes, consists of 25 hectares of vineyard. Most of the soil, which is at an altitude of 1100-1300 feet above the sea level, is composed of clayey marls and limestone with layers of sand. The yields are very low and the total production is about 7,500 cases a year. The harvest begins in mid September and done exclusively by hand with a very careful selection of the picked grapes. Always following a strict family tradition, red wines are neither clarified nor filtered.
The Conterno style of Barolo has always been ultra-traditional, with a long maceration followed by extended aging in large, oak casks (botti). Today, the "regular" Barolos are aged for four years before bottling, and the Monfortino for six to seven years - the only "modernist" concession in the entire vinification and aging process!
