Domaine de Trevallon
Chalky Soils Shaping Minimal Intervention Wines
Carved into northern slopes of Provence's Alpilles are the spectacularly beautiful vineyards of Domaine de Trévallon. The vines are planted into the hillsides' steep, chalky, white limestone soil, making the mountains that protect them look as if they are always covered in snow. There is no person that has done more to elevate the quality and prestige of the wines around Les Baux than Eloi Dürrbach, son of Jacqueline and René, who began planting vines in the three valleys in 1973. They divided their red grape holdings equally among Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Both varieties thrive in the deep chalky soils, and the 50/50 blend turned out to be the perfect balance between the wild qualities of the Mediterranean basin and the structure of a more northerly climate.
The Dürrbachs employed organic farming from the beginning, long before it was a trend. They take a minimalist approach in the cellars, where they only work with native yeasts. The reds are made using 100% whole cluster fermentation and are aged for two years in a combination of foudres (95%) and barrels (5%), while the whites age for one year in barrel. The finished red wines display aromas of pine trees and garrigue which surround the vineyard, opening to a velvety texture and ripe tannins at the finish.
Following Eloi's passing in 2021, his daughter Ostiane has taken over leadership of the domaine. Having joined her father at the estate in 2009, she worked alongside him for over a decade, learning his philosophy of minimal intervention: "The less you do, the better the wine!" Now, as the estate's primary steward, Ostiane maintains her father's commitment to quality.
