Domaine Collotte
A Century of Devotion to Marsannay
The common thread running through Domaine Collotte is a visceral attachment to Marsannay. For over 100 years now, each generation has dedicated its life to this village and its vineyards, nestled in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits. Current head of the estate, Philippe Colotte, was only 16 when he left the viticultural high school to join his father on his estate. Self-taught and convinced that the terroirs of Marsannay had a real card to play in Burgundy, he would take the estate to the top. Philippe's daughter, Isabelle, has completed viticulture school and has joined her father in the domaine. Her specialty is making the family's superb Marsannay blancs.
The estate’s Bourgogne parcel was planted in 1947 and there are 5 parcels of 50+ year old vines in the super-value Marsannay VV. Indeed all of the Marsannay single vineyard cuvées are old vines. Tillage is all done by plowing, no chemical weed-killers ever used, and the philosophy is that a lot of work in the vines promotes healthy grapes for excellent wine. Collotte's yields are well below the appellation's allowances. All fermentations are only done with indigenous yeasts.
Through conviction and love of the terroir, the estate has taken off: in 40 years, it has grown from 3 hectares to 16 today. And even if some parcels are located in Chambolle-Musigny, Fixin or Gevrey-Chambertin, it is in Marsannay-la-Côte that the heart of Domaine Collotte beats. Clos de Jeu, Champ Salomon, Boivin, Grasses Têtes, Combereau: each Climat de Marsannay plunges us into the history of an estate that is proud of its roots.
