Domaine Begue-Mathiot

A Chablis Estate Continuing a Family Legacy

Situated less than 3km west of the town center of Chablis, this family estate traces its humble beginnings to the hard work of its founder, Joël Begue. An experienced viticultural contract worker, Monsieur Begue leveraged his connections and knowledge of the area to acquire 3 hectares of vineyards in 1985. Along with his wife, Maryse, they began selling bottles that same year, eventually establishing the domaine in 1990. They gradually expanded their vineyard holdings to 12 hectares by the year 2000, acquiring Premier Cru parcels both on the east (Vaucopins, Fourchaume) and west (Vosgros, Vaucopins) banks of the Serein river.

Meanwhile, their daughter Guylhaine began studying winemaking at a young age, learning from her parents the skills of the trade. In 2005, after obtaining a degree in Oenology, Guylhaine continued working with her parents and became a partner of the business in 2008. Sadly, that same year Joël passed away. Together with her brother Joffrey and her mother, Guylhaine helms the family venture, continuing her father’s legacy.

With the vines ranging in age from 20 to 70 years old, the domaine vinifies each Cru using the same methodology to showcase the characteristics of each plot. Eschewing any oak, production is done entirely in stainless steel tanks. The grapes undergo direct pressing, settling for 20 hours. Following alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wines are aged for 10 months on the lees before bottling.
