Do Ferreiro
Founding Growers of Rías Baixas Since 1988
Gerardo Méndez was part of the original group of 14 growers who elevated the region’s potential, as he and his father Francisco were integral in forming the original denomination of origin Rías Baixas in 1988. Highly regarded for crafting albariño, the winery has become a reference point for the grape. They farm over 175 tiny plots of albariño by hand, located in the Salnès subzone of Rías Baixas.
Today, Manuel and Encarna contribute to the same spirit of uncompromising quality to the family business as they also push the exploration of Rías Baixas into new, uncharted territory. Manuel, who took over as lead-winemaker from his father with the 2015 vintage, is busy isolating plots and exploring how different soils, elevations, and exposures can affect these transparent wines.
The sub-area of Val do Salnés where the winery sits is one of the most emblematic areas of the Designation of Origin Rías Baixas. This sub-zone is famous for being the heart of Albariño, one of the most recognized white grape varieties in Spain and the world, which grows exceptionally well in its cool and humid climate. Moderate temperatures and abundant rainfall throughout the year are characteristic of this area. These factors, along with their granite and sandy soils, contribute to create the ideal conditions for the development of grapes with high acidity, freshness and a great aromatic expression. The Albariños del Val do Salnés wines usually stand out for their floral and fruity aromas (such as green apple, peach and citrus) and a marked minerality.
