Chermette
Traditional Beaujolaise Winemaking in the Golden Stone Hills of France
The Famille Chermette estate has been a family-run winegrowing business since the 17th century, located in Saint-Vérand in the Golden Stone area, south of Beaujolais in Rhone. The Beaujolais hills were formed 540 million years ago and boast a rare geological diversity of more than 300 types of soil. The parcels managed by the family contain both clay-limestone soil and granitic soil, with vines here having an average age ranging from 15 to 100 years old.
The Famille Chermette takes a sustainable approach to agriculture by harvesting their grapes manually and utilizing solar panels and water collection tanks on their land, earning them a High Environmental Value certification. Their goal is to be the least interventionist possible both in the vineyard and in their way of making wine.
This estate uses the traditional Beaujolaise winemaking practiced by their ancestors, the semi-carbon winemaking method, because it is perfectly suited to the Gamay and their terroir. They vinify without baking powder, only using the natural yeasts of the grape. The whole grapes – not destemmed – are covered; the tank is then saturated with carbon dioxide and closed. The goal is to give color and structure to the wine with soft and silky tannins. The wines of the estate are aged in five different containers, including stainless steel tanks, concrete tanks, and acacia and oak barrels. The wines are bottled with little or no filtration and the addition of no sulfur or very little depending on the cuvée. These methods allow the terroir to express itself fully and to obtain authentic and personalized wines.
