Chateau Haut-Brion
One of Bordeaux’s Oldest and Most Revered Estates
One of the oldest wineries in Bordeaux, ancient documents show that Chateau Haut-Brion was growing grape vines as far back as the 15th century, though evidence suggests that the first vines may have been planted there as early as the 1st century A.D. The vineyard is located in the commune of Pessac, just a few miles southwest of Bordeaux’s city center, within the Pessac-Léognan appellation at the northern edge of the Graves wine-growing region. Château Haut-Brion is the only wine to be both First Growth from the 1855 classification and Classified Growth of the Graves.
The vineyard stretches across an area of 51 hectares and is notable for its distinctive gravel soil, composed of small quartz pebbles that aid with natural drainage. The estate encourages deep rooting for the vines and maintains plant cover during the winter to reduce soil erosion, while mechanical interventions are restricted. Soil enrichment is carried out annually by adding compost according to the needs of each plot. The compost used is produced at the property, using pruned vine shoots after a composting cycle.
The wines of Château Haut-Brion are renowned all over the world due to the unique ecosystem of their terroir, as well as a succession of dedicated professionals. Creating a blend requires an in-depth knowledge of the history of the estate, its terroir, and its signature to anticipate and imagine how the wine may evolve over time. This century-old blending culture reflects more than five centuries of tradition, placing Château Haut-Brion as a pivotal estate in the global history of wine.
