Château Giscours has constantly reinvented itself to survive the centuries. From founder Pierre de Lhomme to the Albada Jelgersma family currently managing the estate, all owners have been passionate about pulling together the estate’s land and giving this vineyard, named a Third Grand Cru Classé in 1855, a reputation for excellence.
Giscours has an exceptional terroir made up of various plots, the oldest of which were planted in 1923. The area is characterized by its dry gravel hilltops and oceanic climate, providing their four grape varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot the perfect conditions in which to express themselves. Their oldest plots are maintained using interplanting where they select young vines to plant among the old ones. All of these personalities live side by side and help to renew the plots that the winegrowers cultivate like miniature gardens. More than half of their vineyards are now cultivated using organic agriculture methods, a proportion that is increasing every year.
Once harvested, the grapes undergo sorting, de-stemming, cold maceration, and then malolactic fermentation. This winemaking stage is guided by regular tasting that results in the creation of a specific blend, the birth of a vintage with a unique personality! The wine then gains fullness and density as it matures in French oak barrels and is bottled once it has achieved the elegance and finesse characteristic of Giscours.
