Chateau Gassier

Regenerative Winemaking on a Fifth-Generation Estate

Not far from Aix-en-Provence sits Gassier’s unique site at the foot of the Saint-Victoire mountain. In 1982, Antoni Gassier, already the owner of an estate in the Var region, acquired the Gassier property along with its 40 hectares of vines. After learning every facet of winemaking alongside his father, Georges Gassier (5th generation) took over the estate and continued its legacy.

The estate has been certified organic since 2016. In the vineyard, Georges Gassier has adopted regenerative agriculture focused on two key goals: promoting rainwater infiltration into our soils and increasing organic matter to revitalise the land. To accomplish this, the estate has planted cover crops, restored biodiversity, introduced green waste from nearby villages back into their plots, and optimized treatments against diseases such as mildew. These actions have played a significant role in revitalizing the soils while fostering the growth of local flora and fauna.

The wines of this terroir draw their identity from three main sources. First, a meticulous selection of Syrah and Grenache grapes, celebrated for their excellence in rosé production, with their combined proportion making up at least 50% of the final blend. Next, a unique microclimate shaped by the mistral wind, where cool nights and mornings help preserve the natural acidity of the berries, resulting in wines of remarkable freshness. Finally, a controlled yield of 50 hectolitres per hectare, with an average of only 4,000 vines plants per hectare, ensures clusters rich in concentrated aromas. This delicate balance of grape varieties, climate, and yield management creates characterful wines that reflect the vitality of their terroir.
