Chateau du Cedre

Three Generations Shaping the Modern Identity of Cahors

Château du Cèdre is located in Cahors, which is located about an hour and a half east of Bordeaux. The Verhaeghe vineyards were founded in the 1950s by Léon Verhaeghe. His son Charles began making wines at Château du Cèdre in the 1970s and was a pioneer in that he planted vines on the poor stony soils of the Cahors appellation, at a time when most wines were mass produced. Since 1988, third generation Pascal and Jean-Marc have continued in the same vein, perfecting the approach with their meticulous work in the vineyard and the cellar.

Chateau du Cedre stopped using chemical weedkillers in 1992 and ten years later abandoned synthetic plant protection products altogether. In 2012, they were certified as organic. To preserve microbiological life and minimise soil compaction, the vineyards are grassed between rows and they work with straddle tractors. The various tasks such as pruning, thinning-out, de-budding, lifting, leaf removal and green harvesting are all still carried out by hand.

Cahors wines are made predominantly from Malbec and known for being powerful, rich and dark. Pascal and Jean-Marc build on these terroir-driven qualities to produce wines that are very polished and remarkably balanced, utilizing long aging periods in oak barrels and 57HL casks. These wines are quite approachable when young, as well as age exceptionally well. No oenological inputs are used during the vinification process. Wine production is carried out with indigenous yeasts and without added sulphites. As a result of these choices, they have observed finer tannins and greater aromatic complexity.
