Founded in 1965 and located just across the river from Avignon, the co-op cellar known as Les Vignerons d’Estézargues has championed sustainable and organic viticulture and natural winemaking for decades. Most of the original founding families are still members today, with the third generation now in command.
Led by Armelle Rouault in the village of Estézargues, this cooperative cellar consists of 12 local growers that believe sharing know-how and the cost of cellar space and equipment brings important synergies to the participating growers. The members cultivate a total of 550 hectares among them on soil consisting of pebbles on clay and produce approximately 160,000 cases each year. Currently, three quarters of their vineyard is certified organic, with the remaining quarter in the process of being converted towards organic.
Estézargues produces primarily red wines vinified in concrete and stainless steel; the best plots of each grower member are vinified separately. They manage their cellar with a judicious use of low-intervention techniques: nothing is inoculated, sulfur is kept to a bare minimum, and the wines are bottled without filtration.
