Castel Pujol
Sustainable Viticulture Along the Border of Uruguay and Brazil
Bodega Cerro Chapeu was launched in 1975 by the Carrau family of Cerro Chapeu after starting one of the first vineyard reconversions in the country. Their philosophy is the low input winemaking in balance with the environment. The winery built in 1997 within a hill is based on gravity, which together with innovative oenological techniques and the family experience that characterizes Cerro Chapeu, result in unique wines.
In 1973, Quico Carrau Pujol, in collaboration with the University of California Davis, began the search for a terroir to plant the first virus-free vines. After going through and analyzing different soils in the South of Brazil and North of Uruguay, they found this property in Rivera, Cerro Chapeu, in Cuchilla de Santana, with sandy, reddish and deep soils, with low fertility and very good drainage. It is here where the project of selecting vineyards that would adapt to this place began.
Today, after more than 40 years, the successful adaptation of varieties such as the Tannat can be verified. Other varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Arinarnoa, Sauvignon blanc, Pinot noir, and Chardonnay. Within their vineyards they implement sustainable viticulture practices, with 100% of their grapes grown in their vineyard. Conscious use of water and soil resources, they avoid artificial irrigation and are careful to recycle water.
