Calera

Mt. Harlan Vineyards Creating Compelling Pinot Noir

Calera is a vision, and Calera’s wines truly express the sense of place. Rather than follow the recommended path, Josh Jensen became a pioneer in American Pinot Noir. Taking his cue from the great domaines of Burgundy, which have grown grapes in limestone soil for centuries, he set out in search of the perfect spot in California to create wines unique to the world but in the style of the greatest wines of France. He ventured off the grid to plant on the site of an old limekiln in the Gabilan Mountains of California's Central Coast. Today, Calera wines still express that pioneer spirit and are revered the world over. Even Robert Parker is convinced: "Calera is one of the most compelling Pinot Noir specialists of not only the New World, but of Planet Earth."

Located 100 miles south of San Francisco and about 37 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, the limestone-rich parcel is found near Mt. Harlan in San Benito County. Its elevation at 2,200 feet above sea level makes it one of the highest and coolest vineyard properties in California. The direct flow of cold marine air off the Pacific Ocean through the Monterey Bay coast cools the air, with the elevation further moderating the climate.

In 2008 the Mt. Harlan vineyards were certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers. Like much of California, the summer growing season is very dry, reducing the need for pesticides. Instead, beneficial insects to reduce pest bug populations, compost mixtures to enhance the organic content of the mountain soils, and cover crop methods to improve soil nutrient levels are natural ways to combat any viticultural problems. The fruit of their labor is precious with crops rarely exceeding two tons per acre, emphasizing quality over quantity.
