Biondi-Santi

A Cornerstone of Italian Winemaking in Montalcino

It is a rare phenomenon that a wine can trace its origins to a single man. Brunello di Montalcino, however, owes its existence to Ferruccio Biondi Santi who in 1888 invented Brunello. Ferruccio Biondi Santi not only crafted the first Brunello in 1888 but also set the stage for what would become one of Italy's most prestigious wine denominations. Today, the estate remains dedicated to this tradition, producing wines that are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and remarkable aging potential.

Situated just southeast of Montalcino, Biondi-Santi’s 32-hectare estate is blessed with soils rich in galestro rock and marl, which provide an ideal foundation for cultivating the Sangiovese Grosso grape. The winery's approach to winemaking is a blend of respect for its rich enological heritage and a commitment to natural viticulture. Noted diurnal shifts ensure the characteristic aromas and acid levels that lead to the expressive, long-aging Brunellos typical of the estate. By employing traditional vinicultural methods, Biondi-Santi highlights the unique characteristics of its wines, or tipicità, ensuring that each bottle continues to embody the essence of its exceptional terroir.

Thanks to the meticulous cultivation and clonal selection of the different generations, the Brunello Biondi-Santi, or BBS11, became an officially recognized and registered clone – the first to be named after a single producer. BBS11 was chosen to match the terroir and Franco Biondi Santi’s vision: elegant, structured wines with natural high-acidity, low alcohol, balance, and finesse.
