Artemis Karamolegos
Assyrtiko Wines Influenced by Santorinian Volcanic Soil
Artemis Karamolegos Winery is a continuation of Artemis’s family tradition that started almost a century ago with the cultivation of local produce, Assyrtiko in particular, in Santorini. Artemis, born and raised in Santorini, is intimately acquainted with the volcanic soil of the island. Through his successful journey, he has refined his vision, bringing to the surface the dynamism of Assyrtiko, showcasing the diversity and expressiveness of the variety across different regions of the island. Today, Artemis Karamolegos Winery is known for its remarkable range of Assyrtiko wines, authentic to the volcanic soils of Santorini and expressed with simplicity, typicity, and capacity to age over time.
The Santorinian volcanic soil, known locally as “aspa,” is rich in minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, iron, and magnesium. These minerals are essential for the growth and development of grapevines. Τhe majority of the vines are over 100 years old, and trained in ‘’kouloura’’, which is the traditional basket-shaped pruning system for protecting the grapes from the strong winds of the island. Employing this approach, they achieve low yields with high quality and more concentrated grapes.
Winemaking revolves around contact with the lees, using stainless steel tanks, and conducting micro vinifications dedicated to highlighting the different characteristics that emerge from each region of the island, such as the Single Vineyards series. By combining clay and concrete vessels, Artemis allows the variety to express itself and deliver exceptional results with greater structure and texture. With a range of barrels with different styles, sizes and usages, Artemis creates a unique profile to engage the powerful nature of Assyrtiko.
