Alphonse Mellot

Elegant standard bearers producing Sancerre at its finest.

Alphonse Mellot is among the royalty of Sancerre, with a family lineage dating back to 1513 and a reputation for producing some of the Loire Valley’s most elegant and ageworthy Sauvignon Blancs. Based in the town of Sancerre, the domaine is currently run by yet another Alphonse Mellot, who took over from his father in the 1990s. This father and son duo is part of the family's heritage and they are the 18th and 19th to bear the name.

The estate practices biodynamic farming across its 47+ hectares, including the prized parcel, La Moussière, a 30 hectare monopole. Grapes are harvested by hand, and fermentation often occurs in wooden vats or large barrels rather than stainless steel, contributing to the wines’ layered texture and aging potential. Mellot’s wines are both deeply traditional and innovatively handled—a benchmark for serious Loire Valley Sauvignon.
