Community Favorites: Jean Marc Pillot

Jean-Marc Pillot is Chassagne-Montrachet based producer that is an under the radar Community Wine favorite, and here’s why:

We are thrilled to announce that the arrival of the newest vintage from one of our favorite producers: Jean Marc Pillot is imminent. If you haven’t heard of him you probably aren’t alone, as his wines are often snapped up by people in the wine industry before they hit the shelves and are allocated to the bottle.

The Pillot family has been working in Chassagne Montrachet for four generations with Jean Marc at the helm since 1991. He is a true Chardonnay specialist with some of the greatest crus in Chassagne, but also has holdings across the southern tier of the Cote de Beaune.

His generous, electrifying renderings of these great terroirs mirror his personality: exuberant, expressive, and bristling with energy. Today, he is joined by his immensely talented son Antonin to whom he is carefully passing the reins; Antonin is deeply involved in every aspect of viticulture and cellar work, and his presence ensures a shining future for the domaine.

Jean-Marc and Antonin work their exceedingly old vines without the use of chemicals. Fermentations begin naturally, and the use of oak is thoughtful and measured, tailored to each wine in each vintage. Barrel aging has been extended at Antonin’s suggestion from 12 to 18 months across the board; the wines remain on their fine lees the entire time with no racking performed, gaining additional harmony and complexity.

We truly love these expressive, taught, and complex wines.
